What Actually Happens When You Start Eating Intuitively: Weight, Control, & Freedom

Updated: Feb 15, 2021

So, you want to eat intuitively and find food freedom?

Well, if you’re anything like my clients when they first come to me for guidance, you probably aren’t 100% sure what to expect.

The idea of freedom and eating what you want, whenever you want sounds nice hypothetically, but there’s a lot of “what ifs” that might be taking up space in your mind…

What if I gain weight?

What if I totally lose control and let myself go?

What if the idea of total freedom scares me?

I’ve heard all of the questions before, and I’ve been in your shoes too! With any sort of growth, you’ll always have to take a step (or 2) out of your comfort zone in order to truly transform and see results. Lucky for you, I have all the answers you need so that that leap doesn’t feel too scary.

So - what actually happens when you start to eat intuitively? Read below for the scoop.

Q: What happens to your weight when you start to eat with love and intuition?

A: It totally depends! Some people who restrict their food intake are underweight, so when they start to unlock their food freedom and release restrictions and food fears, they’ll start to eat more and restore their weight. For these people, they’ll gain weight and settle within their body’s ideal set range. For others who might binge, overeat, or disregard their body’s fullness cues, they might lose weight when they start eating intuitively and settle at a weight that’s a bit lower and within their body’s ideal set range. There are some people who will not experience any change in weight when they start eating intuitively. It totally depends on where you’re at now, and where your body wants to be. The main focus of eating intuitively is not about weight at all though - the fluctuations that may or may not occur are secondary to the transformation that will transpire in how you think, act, and feel.

Q: If I don’t restrict or track or plan, won’t I just lose control?

A: That explanation seems logical, but it’s actually false! Sure, if you go from 100% control to 0% control, then you’re probably not gonna feel too great. That’s why there’s an entire lesson in the Food Freedom Collective on the control paradox. When you actually address the root of your relationship with control (and fear, anxiety, and safety), then you’ll be able to release control in some areas of your nutrition, food, and body. With this gradual and safe release, you’ll actually feel MORE in control of your body, life, and food than ever before. More on going with the flow and releasing control here!

Q: Full freedom seems scary. What if I don’t want it?

A: It’s true: most humans are more scared of freedom and success than they are of confinement and failure. Maybe more freedom means more responsibilities, decisions, options, spontaneity - and some of that is true! But ultimately, more freedom truly equals more abundance, happiness, and flow. Restriction can feel safe because you’re keeping yourself small - but if you want to live a big and meaningful life, then you’re going to have to step out of that comfort zone and start living large. That means leaning into and fully embracing freedom. I promise you it is worth it!
